Upgrading Your Computer

Windows 98 users: Your computer is over 10 years old! You really got your money’s worth on that computer when you consider that the lifespan of most computers is 3-5 years.

If you have a Windows 98 or Windows 2000 computer it is time for a new one. These machines are not worth fixing. When the price of the computer repair exceeds the price of the used computer or when the price of computer repair is 50% of a new machine; you should consider replacement of your computer.

If you are considering a new machine – it is a great time to buy. Prices are down and speeds are up.  See New PC Purchases for information about replacing your computer.

You can diagnose your computer specs by doing the following:

  • Left Click Start
  • Right Click My Computer
  • Left Click Properties

The General Tab tells you about your computer specifications:

  • Operating System (Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7)
  • Processor Speed
  • RAM - Usually done in 256, 512 or 1 G you may see numbers slightly lower then that when the computer is using some of the resources. 1.99 GB of RAM is really 2GB.

We recommend 1G RAM for XP and 2G RAM for Vista, under average conditions. If you do photography, gaming or video editing your needs may be greater.

RAM varies in cost widely but has been coming down in price lately.
We install RAM free, in most cases, at the shop.
Some laptops require ½ hour of work to get to the RAM, (under the keyboard) we have a fee for this type of laptop. Stop by and see our friendly staff and we can determine your needs together.
